What a race we witnessed at the Shanghai International Circuit. The 2026 Formula 1 season produced one of its most exciting races yet with incredible wheel to wheel action, dramatic DNFs and a stunning first career victory for Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli.

Antonelli made history this weekend by becoming the youngest pole sitter in Formula 1 history and then followed it up with a sensational drive to win the Chinese Grand Prix. The young Mercedes driver had to defend against serious pressure from some of the biggest names in Formula 1 but showed remarkable composure to take his first Grand Prix victory.

Behind him, teammate George Russell completed a dominant day for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team with a strong second place finish.

One of the highlights of the race was the spectacular wheel to wheel battle between Ferrari teammates Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari drivers produced a masterclass in racecraft as they fought each other cleanly for podium positions in one of the best on track battles of the season so far.

Elsewhere there were major problems for several teams. Both McLaren Formula 1 Team cars failed to start the race due to electrical issues, while Max Verstappen retired with reliability problems for Red Bull Racing.

There were also impressive performances throughout the midfield. Oliver Bearman delivered an excellent drive to fifth place for Haas F1 Team while Pierre Gasly scored valuable points for Alpine F1 Team.

Join Tony Craig and the community as we react to one of the most exciting sessions of the Formula 1 weekend. Sprint Qualifying will determine the grid for the Chinese GP Sprint Race and with limited practice running earlier in the day, teams will be pushing hard to find performance quickly.

Just like our Free Practice watchalong, we will have live track and driver data displayed on screen throughout the session. This includes lap times, sector times, engine data, RPM, gear selection and speed, giving you a deeper insight into how the cars are performing as the drivers push for the fastest laps possible.

There are several fascinating storylines heading into Sprint Qualifying. Ferrari are expected to continue running their new rotating rear wing concept as Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc look to unlock more straight line speed for the Shanghai circuit.

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team will also be under the spotlight as rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli attempts to deliver another strong performance in qualifying conditions.

Meanwhile Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing will be aiming to put themselves at the front of the grid as the fight for Sprint Race positions heats up.

Join Tony Craig and the community as we watch the first on-track running of the weekend from the Shanghai International Circuit, with teams beginning their preparations for the Chinese GP. This session is crucial as drivers and engineers collect their first real data on tyre performance, car balance, and straight-line speed under the latest Formula 1 regulations.

During the live watchalong we will have live track and driver data on screen, giving you a deeper look at what is happening on track in real time. This includes lap times, sector times, engine data, RPM, gear selection and speed, helping you understand exactly how the drivers and teams are performing throughout the session.

Ferrari are preparing a fascinating technical development for the Shanghai race weekend as Lewis Hamilton is set to run a new rotating rear wing concept designed to reduce drag and improve straight-line speed. The innovation could give Ferrari a significant advantage on Shanghai’s long straights and represents one of the most intriguing upgrades we have seen so far in the 2026 Formula 1 season.

But Ferrari are not stopping there. The team are also preparing a software update for the Chinese Grand Prix which could unlock more performance from the car but may also make the Ferrari more nervous and difficult to drive for Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

Elsewhere in the paddock a debate is growing between the teams as Mercedes push for another change to Formula 1 start procedures, while Ferrari are strongly opposing the proposal.
