Carlos Sainz’s Williams future is now one of the big F1 Driver Market stories. Sainz joined Williams after James Vowles sold him the long-term project, but the 2026 car has not delivered the progress he expected. Williams arrived overweight, missed key preparation and have struggled for pace and reliability. For a driver of Sainz’s level, that creates a serious problem. AUDI INTEREST Audi could be one of the most logical options. Carlos Sainz Senior reportedly wanted his son to choose Audi before the Williams move, and now that route may be back in the conversation. Sainz knows Mattia Binotto from Ferrari, Audi have major manufacturer ambition, and Nico Hulkenberg’s future is already under pressure. If Audi want a proven leader to build around, Sainz makes sense. ASTON MARTIN OPTION Aston Martin could also become a major player. If Fernando Alonso leaves at the end of the season, Sainz would be an obvious candidate to join the Silverstone project. Aston Martin have Adrian Newey, Honda, Lawrence Stroll’s backing and serious long-term ambition. The car is not there yet, but the ingredients are still attractive. WILLIAMS PROBLEM The question is whether Williams can still convince Sainz to stay. Sainz has said his ideal plan is to continue long term, but that depends on Williams making real progress. Right now, that feels conditional. James Vowles has to prove the team can move forward quickly, or Williams risk losing the biggest name they managed to attract. DRIVER MARKET DECISION The most likely routes now appear to be Audi and Aston Martin. Audi offer manufacturer power and a Binotto reunion. Aston Martin offer Newey, Honda and a potentially stronger long-term project. Either way, Sainz’s future could become one of the biggest 2027 Formula 1 driver market stories.
