The race delivered incredible overtakes, huge strategy calls, and a major Ferrari mistake that ultimately handed Mercedes victory in Melbourne. The race drama actually began before the lights even went out. Oscar Piastri crashed on the formation lap at his home Grand Prix, putting the McLaren into the wall at Turn 3 and retiring before the race even started in front of his home crowd. When the race finally got underway, Ferrari made a brilliant start with Charles Leclerc jumping into the lead while Lewis Hamilton surged through the field. Early racing between Leclerc and George Russell produced some fantastic wheel to wheel battles as the new 2026 Formula 1 regulations delivered surprisingly exciting racing. However the key moment of the race came when a Virtual Safety Car appeared around lap 12. Mercedes reacted instantly and pitted both Russell and Antonelli for a cheap stop that only cost around 13 seconds. Ferrari made the crucial mistake. Despite Lewis Hamilton suggesting over the radio that Ferrari should pit one of the cars, the Scuderia stayed out and stuck to their original strategy. When Ferrari eventually made their pit stops under green flag conditions they lost track position and handed the advantage to Mercedes. That decision ultimately decided the race. George Russell controlled the race from the front and Mercedes secured a stunning 1-2 finish with Kimi Antonelli finishing second, while Charles Leclerc salvaged a podium for Ferrari and Hamilton finished fourth. Meanwhile Max Verstappen delivered one of the drives of the race, climbing from P20 on the grid to finish P6 in a strong recovery drive for Red Bull. There were also impressive performances from Ollie Bearman scoring points for Haas, rookie Liam Lindblad finishing in the points, and Audi scoring points with Gabriel Bortoleto. Elsewhere Aston Martin continued to struggle with their Honda power unit issues and ran limited laps simply to gather data after the vibration problems that have plagued their new car.
