The FIA is considering appointing an independent engine manufacturer to supply a cost-effective V8 that any customer team could buy. Cosworth has been mentioned as an example, but no supplier is confirmed. The aim is to give independent teams another route and reduce manufacturer influence over customers. MANUFACTURER CONTROL FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem believes a neutral engine supply could prevent major manufacturers using power-unit deals as political leverage. That could be huge for smaller teams. Instead of relying on a factory partner, customers could choose an FIA-approved engine with controlled costs, power and availability. CHEAPER AND LIGHTER F1 The V8 plan is being driven by cost, complexity, weight and sound. The FIA believes simpler power units could cut research and development spending significantly and help make the cars around 100kg lighter. That would mean less battery hardware, fewer complex systems and lighter, more aggressive F1 cars. HYBRID POWER REDUCED The proposed V8 would still include some electrification, but nowhere near the current level. The early target being discussed is around 10–15% battery contribution, compared with the much larger electrical share used today. The exact decision between turbocharging, hybrid power or a combination has not yet been finalised. REFUELLING RETURN? Refuelling is also back on the agenda. A naturally aspirated V8 could require more fuel, so the FIA is studying whether mid-race refuelling would allow smaller tanks and lighter cars. Nothing is approved, and safety, racing quality and team costs still need to be assessed. F1 2031 REVOLUTION These plans are still being developed, but the direction is clear. Formula 1 wants cheaper engines, lighter cars, better sound and more freedom for independent teams. The big question is whether an FIA-selected V8 supplier would create fairer competition — or introduce a completely new political battle.
