After taking pole at the Red Bull Ring, Russell controlled the race under huge pressure and held off Max Verstappen to win by just 1.611 seconds. That is Russell’s second win of the 2026 F1 season and it cuts Kimi Antonelli’s championship lead down to 40 points. VERSTAPPEN FIGHTS BACK Max Verstappen finished second after starting fifth and recovering from his dramatic qualifying crash. At Red Bull’s home race, Verstappen could not quite catch Russell, but this was still one of his strongest Sundays of the season. Red Bull needed a response in Austria — and Verstappen gave them one. ANTONELLI STILL LEADS Kimi Antonelli finished third for Mercedes after topping practice earlier in the weekend. Antonelli still leads the championship, but Russell’s win means the fight inside Mercedes is getting tighter. Mercedes now have a huge driver battle brewing between the rookie championship leader and the experienced race winner chasing him down. FERRARI SLIP BACK Ferrari started with Charles Leclerc second and Lewis Hamilton third, but the race did not deliver the result Maranello needed. Hamilton finished fifth, while Leclerc dropped to eighth after a difficult afternoon. After strong qualifying pace, Ferrari will need answers on race pace, tyre behaviour and strategy. MCLAREN AND THE MIDFIELD Oscar Piastri finished fourth for McLaren, ahead of Hamilton, while Lando Norris came home seventh. Isack Hadjar delivered a strong sixth for Red Bull, and Racing Bulls picked up points with Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad. Austria gave us a tight fight, but Mercedes still look like the benchmark.
