Newey says Alonso’s experience, technical feedback and ability to guide development make him a crucial part of the project. But Alonso is not committing yet. He wants clear evidence that Aston Martin and Honda are moving forward before deciding whether to stay. HUNGARY UPGRADE DECISION Aston Martin’s major AMR26 upgrade is expected for the Hungarian Grand Prix, the final race before the summer break. Newey hopes the package will prove the team is finally heading in the right direction. A Honda power-unit update is expected after the break, but Alonso may need to make his decision before he sees the full effect. COLAPINTO LEFT WAITING Alpine have praised Franco Colapinto’s progress but refused to guarantee his seat for 2027. Steve Nielsen says Colapinto is improving and deserves his place on merit, but Alpine will decide when the time is right. That leaves the door open for a bigger name if one becomes available. ALONSO TO ALPINE? Flavio Briatore runs Alpine and also manages Alonso, making the situation impossible to ignore. Reports of an Alonso-Alpine reunion may be more than a negotiating tactic. If Alonso decides Aston Martin are not progressing quickly enough, Alpine could offer him a stronger short-term opportunity alongside Pierre Gasly. COLAPINTO’S BIG PROBLEM Colapinto has taken a major step forward in 2026, scoring points regularly and matching Gasly at times. But even strong improvement may not protect him if a two-time world champion becomes available. The key question is whether Alpine genuinely believe in Colapinto — or are keeping the seat open while Alonso decides his future. ASTON MARTIN OR ALPINE? Alonso controls the next move. If Aston Martin’s upgrade works, he may stay and continue building with Newey and Honda. If it fails, Alpine could become a serious alternative, leaving Colapinto searching for another seat.
