Today the biggest story in Formula 1 is Ferrari’s controversial strategy decision during the Virtual Safety Car that may have cost Charles Leclerc a much stronger result in Melbourne. Ferrari chose not to pit either car when the Virtual Safety Car was deployed, despite Mercedes immediately bringing both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli into the pits for a cheap stop that only cost around 13 seconds. Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur has defended the decision, claiming that pitting would not have changed the result. But the numbers tell a very different story. At the finish of the race Charles Leclerc was just 12.5 seconds behind Antonelli, meaning that if Ferrari had taken the cheap VSC stop they would have gained roughly 13 seconds in track position. The maths simply does not lie. That decision potentially cost Ferrari a shot at second place in the opening race of the 2026 Formula 1 season, and former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya has already criticised Ferrari’s strategy call, saying he was surprised but not surprised to see another strategic mistake from the Scuderia. Elsewhere in the paddock there were several other fascinating stories from the Australian Grand Prix weekend. Rookie Franco Colapinto showed incredible reactions to avoid Liam Lawson’s crash in a moment that could easily have ended both drivers’ races. Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar also revealed he could have taken the race lead, but claimed a lack of battery deployment prevented him from attacking at the crucial moment. Meanwhile Charles Leclerc compared the new 2026 Formula 1 energy deployment system to Mario Kart, highlighting just how important battery management has become in the new era of Formula 1 racing. In today’s F1 news update we break down: • Ferrari’s controversial VSC strategy decision • Why the maths proves Ferrari may have made a costly mistake • Fred Vasseur defending the strategy call • Juan Pablo Montoya criticising Ferrari • Hadjar’s battery frustration at Red Bull • Colapinto’s incredible crash avoidance reaction • Leclerc comparing F1 2026 to Mario Kart If you enjoy F1 news, Formula 1 analysis, race reactions and daily updates, subscribe to F1 Grandstand and turn on notifications so you never miss the latest stories from the Formula 1 paddock.
