Following the vibration problems that plagued testing, the situation has now escalated further with Aston Martin reportedly left without backup battery units for the Honda power unit during the Australian Grand Prix weekend. This raises serious questions about reliability and whether Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll will even be able to complete the race distance if further issues occur during the weekend. Meanwhile there has been a major performance headline from Mercedes, with long run data in Melbourne suggesting George Russell and the W17 could be significantly quicker than their rivals. Some simulations from Free Practice have even suggested Mercedes may have a genuine race pace advantage heading into qualifying. Russell also found himself in trouble with the stewards after receiving a warning and reprimand for driving violations during the Australian GP weekend, adding further drama to the opening round of the season. Elsewhere in the paddock Charles Leclerc has refused to board the Ferrari hype train, playing down expectations despite strong early signs from Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton’s new partnership with the Scuderia. The FIA have also confirmed tweaks to the 2026 driver guidelines following discussions in Qatar, with new clarifications designed to avoid controversial steward decisions during the season. And finally, Red Bull are still confident Max Verstappen will be fighting at the front in Melbourne, despite the early season uncertainty surrounding the new regulations and competitive order.
