The latest report claims McLaren control a break clause in Oscar Piastri’s contract for 2027. Piastri reportedly controls his own 2026 exit option, but from 2027 McLaren may have the power to end the agreement and create space for another driver. If Verstappen cannot realistically join before 2028, the timing could be perfect. VERSTAPPEN TIMELINE A 2027 move is reportedly not yet concrete, with 2028 potentially the more realistic target. Verstappen remains frustrated with Red Bull’s performance and engineering departures, but McLaren may not need to force an immediate move. Brown could wait until the contract structure works in the team’s favour. THE 2024 PHONE CALL Zak Brown has admitted contacting Verstappen’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen, while negotiating Piastri’s extension. Brown said he received the information he needed. Could McLaren have learned that Verstappen would not be available until 2028, then structured Piastri’s contract around that opportunity? PIASTRI HOLDS THE CARDS For 2026, Piastri reportedly controls his own exit clause, meaning McLaren cannot simply remove him if he chooses to stay. But if Red Bull or Audi offer a stronger future, Piastri could leave before McLaren gain control of the situation. LAMBiASE CONNECTION McLaren’s pursuit of Gianpiero Lambiase also fits a possible 2028 timeline. If Lambiase could not join immediately, McLaren may still have been prepared to wait. The contract clause, Verstappen talks and Lambiase pursuit all appear to point towards one long-term plan. WHY McLAREN WANT MAX Verstappen would bring performance, commercial value and major marketing opportunities across McLaren’s road-car and racing businesses. Even an enormous salary could make financial sense if he strengthens the entire brand. PIASTRI’S DECISION Piastri must decide whether to stay and fight or find a team willing to build around him. Red Bull reportedly view him as a possible Verstappen replacement, while Audi could offer a long-term number-one role. Has Brown genuinely been planning this since 2024, or are the latest reports connecting pieces that were never part of one master plan?
