Jacques Villeneuve believes Ferrari should put its full weight behind Lewis Hamilton if it wants a real chance of winning the 2026 Formula 1 championship. Hamilton’s first Ferrari win in Barcelona has changed everything. He now looks like Ferrari’s strongest title hope, while Charles Leclerc is under pressure to respond. LECLERC WARNING This is where the story gets uncomfortable. Leclerc has been Ferrari’s long-term project, but Hamilton has arrived, taken time to build the car and team around him, and now looks ready to attack. If Ferrari believe the title is possible, they need to decide. That creates a brutal question: does Ferrari now have to choose Hamilton? FERRARI ENGINE UPDATE The timing could not be bigger. Ferrari are planning new fuel and engine updates for the Austrian GP, with a Shell fuel package developed around the ADUO-permitted internal combustion engine changes. The aim is to reduce the power gap to Mercedes. If that works, Hamilton’s Barcelona win may not be a one-off. It could be the start of a real Ferrari title push. RED BULL AUSTRIA UPGRADE Red Bull are also bringing a major Austria upgrade, but even Laurent Mekies has admitted one package alone may not be enough. Red Bull still need to close a significant gap to Mercedes and Ferrari. Weight reduction may help, but the bigger issue is whether the RB22 can finally become consistent enough to put Max Verstappen back into the fight. MERCEDES MONACO U-TURN Mercedes have dropped their attempt to challenge George Russell’s Monaco penalties. After discussions with the FIA and Formula One Management, Mercedes decided there was little chance of getting meaningful compensation. But the Monaco penalty row is still alive, with McLaren and Red Bull continuing their appeal process. MERCEDES BATTERY PROBLEM Mercedes have also identified a battery issue behind recent costly retirements. George Russell lost a Canada win chance, while Kimi Antonelli retired from second in Barcelona. Mercedes may still have the fastest package, but reliability is now a serious championship threat.
